DAN FRENCH, DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR
Dr. French is board certified in both equine surgery and equine sports medicine & rehabilitation. His main practice focus is with jumper & dressage clientele. Dan graduated from WCVM in 1983, completed an internship at the Littleton Equine Medical Center in Colorado followed by a surgical residency back at WCVM. He then returned to practice in the Calgary area and has been the resident veterinarian and official FEI Treating Veterinarian at Spruce Meadows for the past 25 years. In addition to his role as a clinical instructor at UCVM, Dan enjoys overseeing the breeding & training of young Hanoverian sport horses at his family’s stable, Teradan Farms.
SUZON SCHAAL, DVM, BSc
Dr. Schaal grew up outside of Millarville, AB on her family farm and has been involved with horses since her youth. She graduated from WCVM in 2004, and then completed an internship at Arizona Equine Medical and Surgical Center before returning to practice at Okotoks Animal Clinic in Alberta. Suzon is a well known and respected competitor in the discipline of Working Cow Horse. In recent years, Suzon and her mount Ginna (Genuine Brown Gal) have won 5 World Championships and multiple Calgary Stampede titles in the Non- Pro division, among other successes. Suzon continues to compete at the top level of her sport while maintaining the busy lifestyle of an equine veterinarian. Suzon has a strong interest in podiatry and lameness, focusing primarily on the western performance horse.
CANDICE CROSBY, DVM, BSc
Dr. Crosby has been involved with horses from a very young age, growing up on her family farm in Falmouth, Nova Scotia. Her father, Kevin Crosby, competed at the top level of show jumping as Candice was growing up. Candice graduated from AVC in 2008, and completed an internship at Okotoks Animal Clinic. She has continued to practice in Alberta since that time. Candice is an Official FEI veterinarian and works as an FEI veterinarian at Spruce Meadows and Rocky Mountain Show Jumping tournaments. Candice is an avid polo player and hunter/jumper competitor. She specializes in performance horse medicine, and focuses her interests on the polo horse and hunter/jumpers. She is a familiar face at Spruce Meadows, Rocky Mountain Show Jumping and the Calgary Polo Club.
JORDAN KOIVU, DVM, BSc, cVMA
Dr Koivu grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and developed a strong passion for horses at a very young age. She acquired a Bachelor of Science at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York and played an active role in the university’s equestrian program, while competing in hunter/ jumper competitions throughout the East Coast and Florida. She graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2015 then carried on to perform an internship at New England Equine Medical & Surgical Center in Dover, New Hampshire. She has a special interest in sports medicine, gastroenterology, emergency medicine and alternative therapies. Jordan is certified in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture and Animal Chiropractic. Jordan joined TD Equine in July 2016 and is enjoying getting to know Alberta. In her spare time she enjoys riding her horse, Oliver, who she actively competes with in hunter and equitation classes. Aside from riding, Jordan most enjoys travelling and spending time with friends and family.
KARLI MERGEN, BA Econ
Karli has a family background in horses, growing up riding from a very young age. Her parents, Gerd and Pat Mergen are well known equestrians in the Calgary area. Karli enjoys spending her spare time riding her horse and is an avid dressage competitor. She plays an integral role as head of administration at TD Equine.
CHARLOTTE WIGHTMAN, BSc
Charlotte is originally from Windsor, Nova Scotia where she grew up on her family’s Standardbred breeding farm. She attended Acadia University, where she studied biology and was captain for the university’s hockey team. Charlotte joined the TD team in the summer of 2016 and oversees the technical operations. She can often be found spending time with her three-legged dog Ophie, whose adventures you can follow on Instagram as ophie_the_tripawd.
JEANIE THOMAS, RAHT
Jeanie has several years experience working in a veterinary clinic and is currently an administrative assistant and receptionist at TD Equine. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, gardening, cooking and travel.
Jodie is originally from England and has always ridden horses from a very young age. She used to compete in Dressage, Show jumping and Hunter trials and is a Qualified Riding Instructor and Equine Massage Therapist. She now lives in Longview with her husband on his family’s farm. She is an administrative assistant and receptionist at TD Equine and can also be seen assisting the vets.
LYNN GERARD, RAHT
Originally from Eastend, Saskatchewan, Lynn has a strong interest in the western performance horse. She and her husband, farrier Cody Williams, have several horses and actively participate in roping. Lynn oversees the technical duties at TD Equine and will often be seen assisting the doctors and helping keep things organized in the practice.

EMMA READ, DVM, DACVS, MVSC
Dr. Emma Read graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1998. She then completed a surgical internship and a Master’s of veterinary science, before entering a large animal surgical residency program at the University of Georgia in Athens. She joined the faculty at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2003 where she taught until 2005. Her ACVS board certification was completed in 2004 and in early 2005, she returned to Alberta and private referral equine practice. She joined the faculty of the University of Calgary (UCVM) in the fall of 2007 as a clinical instructor in large animal surgery. Dr. Read spent the next 8 years as Chair of the Clinical Skills Program developing a multi-instructor, multi-species hands-on training program incorporating OSCE’s, simulators and practical labs. At UCVM she has also participated heavily in the development of the curriculum and assessment practices, as well as establishment of the distributed veterinary teaching hospital. Dr. Read is the recipient of the Pfizer – Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teaching Award, the Killam award for Innovation in Teaching, the University of Calgary Curriculum Development Award, and the Student Union’s Teaching Excellence Award. Her research interests and scholarly activities are in assessment, simulation design and use, as well as clinical skills teaching and learning.
Dr. Read served as Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty from 2015 to 2017. She is currently a Teaching Professor, Large Animal Surgery and has returned to her role as Clinical Skills Program Chair. She is co-chair of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC)’ Council on International Veterinary Medical Education, and a member of the AAVMC’s competency working group. Dr. Read also serves with the ABVMA as vice-chair for the Equine Committee and is a member of Hearing Tribunal.
ALFREDO E. ROMERO, DVM, DACVS
Dr. Alfredo Romero is board-certified in Surgery, and both a Diplomate ofthe American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS) and a Society member inthe American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR). Originally from the Boston Massachusetts area, Dr. Romero completed his veterinary degree at Cornell University 2005. Following veterinary school, Dr. Romero completed an internship in equine surgery at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington KY, followed by a residency in large animal surgery at the University of California, Davis. After 2 years as a surgeon at Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center in NJ, Dr. Romero started a highly successful primary and referral equine medical center outside of Syracuse NY. Dr. Romero has advanced training and has lectured nationally in orthopedics, lameness and imaging. He is also trained in equine and large animal rescue. He joined University of Calgary in 2015 and began offering services at TD Equine in 2016.
JEAN-YIN TAN, DVM, DACVIM-LAIM
Dr Jean-Yin Tan is board-certified in internal medicine. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Dr. Tan completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Cornell University in 2005, where she had the opportunity to participate in research on Recurrent Airway Obstruction (heaves) at the renowned Baker Institute of Animal Health. Following a prestigious 1-year internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey, Dr Tan completed her large animal internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota in 2008, where she published on systemic calcinosis in horses and researched Lawsonia in adult horses. She incorporated her expertise in internal medicine with general practice as an equine ambulatory practitioner at UC Davis in California and subsequently in private practice in New Jersey, where she also began internal medicine consultancy work. In 2011 Dr Tan opened a highly successful ambulatory and referral equine veterinary clinic outside of Syracuse, New York, where she served as Managing Partner. She joined University of Calgary as an instructor in Equine Clinical Sciences in 2015. Dr Tan is trained in equine acupuncture, certified in equine rescue, and her interests include equine respiratory disease and equine infectious disease.
